Twenty-one senior performing arts students from Southeast Missouri State University traveled to New York City for a career-launching experience designed to connect directly with industry professionals and prepare for the transition from college to the professional stage.
The cohort, made up of five Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) acting students and 16 BFA musical theatre students, spent four days participating in masterclasses, workshops and networking opportunities with casting directors, agents, music directors and working performers.
Holly Canales, one of this spring's graduates with a BFA in musical theatre and a bachelor's degree in mass communication: tv and film, plans to put her degree to use when moving to New York in August.
"Having the ability to meet with industry professionals and agents working in New York City totally blew my mind and not only did I get to perform for them, but I got to befriend them," said Canales. "I sort of expected the big scary NYC agent, but I was faced with people who really cared for my classmates and me. I felt really respected even though I'm relatively new to the industry. This showcase will have a big impact on my life. I can already tell."
I WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT PERFORMING IN NEW YORK CITY
Throughout the week, students trained in some of New York City's top rehearsal studios and attended masterclasses with casting director Michael Cassara, Craig Holzberg of Avalon Artists Agency, Jason Gutman of The Gersh Agency, and Broadway, film and television actor Allison Guinn. Students also attended commercial acting workshops with Rachel Reiss of Liz Lewis Casting, and music direction workshops with composer and music director Katie-James Rushin. During their time in New York City, seniors performed a live showcase for agents and casting directors.
"We had a busy and productive week in New York," said Christie Rotarius, instructor of musical theatre voice and acting. "Our students learned about the industry, made connections with industry leaders and performed for a group of agents and casting directors looking for new talent. Feedback from industry professionals was extraordinarily positive."
In addition to the live performance, acting BFA seniors created a cinematic-style digital showcase that is currently being viewed by industry professionals across the country. Both formats are designed to introduce students to agents and casting directors who may offer meetings, auditions or representation opportunities.
"We are extraordinarily proud of these graduating seniors in Dobbins Conservatory as they prepare to launch their careers," said Dobbins Conservatory Chair Dr. Kenn Stilson. "They're a talented and hard-working group of young professionals who are going to have a great impact on the entertainment industry."
SEMO's senior showcase experience equips graduating students with the tools and relationships needed to launch their careers in a highly competitive performing arts industry.
