New Hampshire Remains First in the Nation for Child Wellbeing

CONCORD, NH - For the fourth year in a row, New Hampshire ranks first for childhood well-being according to the 2026 KIDS COUNT Data Book released today by the Annie E. Casey Foundation.

"I'm proud that New Hampshire once again ranks #1 for child wellbeing. It's a testament to the work we have done together to support our schools, make childcare more affordable, and protect access to critical services for our kids," said Governor Kelly Ayotte. "I thank the parents, educators, health care providers, state leaders, and everyone who has helped make this possible, and I know we will continue working together to ensure an even brighter future for families in our state."

The 37th edition of the KIDS COUNT Data Book provides a detailed picture of how children are faring nationally and state by state, and ranks states on overall child wellbeing. As in previous years, the report is based on the latest available data on 16 key indicators in four key areas - economic well-being, education, health, and family and community factors. 2026 represents the fifth consecutive year that New Hampshire ranks in the top 5 in each of these key domains.

"We are grateful that New Hampshire remains first among all 50 states for child wellbeing in this year's KIDS COUNT," said Lori Weaver, Commissioner of the NH Department of Health and Human Services. "Investments in kids today build strong families and communities tomorrow. This continued recognition of the Granite State reflects our pride in our communities, our commitment to working together, and our focus on the future."

New Hampshire was ranked first in Economic Wellbeing, Health, and Family and Community, and fourth in Education. The report highlights the key factors that have improved the quality of life for New Hampshire children since 2019, including fewer parents lacking secure employment, more children with health insurance, and fewer teens not in school and not working.
