Secretary Bessent Delivers Remarks before the 250th Anniversary Celebration at the Statue of Liberty

As prepared for delivery.

Good evening. Thank you, Mr. Ambassador, for that kind introduction. It gives me great pleasure to be here on behalf of the Trump Administration.

There are few places more fitting to assemble on the eve of America's 250th anniversary. And no fonder a friend with whom to mark it.

Indeed, from our earliest days, the United States and France have been bound as much by what we fought against as what we have stood for. And while the shadow of tyranny can account for how our alliance was formed, only liberty can explain why it has endured.

There are monuments that mark great military victories. Others that honor great men. And then there are those that stand as testimony to the might of an idea.

Such is the one that soars behind me.

Over the past 250 years - from Tocqueville to today's World Cup fans - the world has marveled at the American nation. At how we have pushed the boundaries of the possible. Secured victory in war and prosperity in peace.

Since she first pierced the New York City skyline, this statue has stood watch over that story.

Now, on the cusp of our great national milestone, she summons us anew, as President Trump has put it, to the work of reclaiming our sovereignty, restoring our prosperity, and reinforcing our liberty.

So to our friends in France, and to all those who hold freedom as dear as we do, long may we continue that work together, as we always have. And long may liberty link our fates as closely as it bound our beginnings.

Thank you.
