Alison Rector's Artist Statement for the exhibition

These paintings are meditations on being. The interior space is a retreat and a sanctuary. People live, work, think and rest in these spaces. The human story is part of the painting.

I invite the viewer to enter the paintings, to escape into the picture plane.

My work is about light. How we see natural light outdoors is very different from the experience of indoor light. Light enters a room through windows and doors, moving around objects and changing throughout the day. Natural light outdoors or entering through a window can feel cool; illumination from a lamp may look warm.

Light illuminates. I use the opaque materiality of oil paint to describe the behavior of light.

As with any color field painting, arrangements of forms make the picture. The viewer navigates the picture plane because of my conscious arrangement of color, form, perspective and composition.

I aim to make paintings with a sense of air, an atmosphere. A fleeting moment of light can transcend the ordinary, transporting us to the extraordinary.
