Valencia makes Wheel Tax-Free City Sticker for veterans renewable online and offers two-year option

CHICAGO - City Clerk Anna Valencia announced today that veterans can now renew their Wheel-Tax Free City Sticker online and choose a two-year option, making it easier for people who have served in the military to renew and stay in compliance with the Wheel Tax.

"Veterans don't get charged for their City Sticker. It's a small thank you from the City for their service to our country," Valencia said. "I'm glad we were able to make this benefit more accessible and make it easier for our veterans to keep up with getting their City Sticker."

The change is an effort to ensure the Wheel Tax-Free Veterans City Sticker more accessible, which was supported by Alderman Gilbert Villegas' (36th Ward) ordinance that was approved by the City Council last year. The Office of the City Clerk plans to continue building on the pilot program as sales software is upgraded to streamline services for veterans and all Chicagoans.

"Our veterans have given so much in service to our country, and the least we can do is make it easier for them to access the benefits they've earned," Villegas said. "By letting veterans renew online for their Wheel Tax-free City Sticker, we're saving them a trip and a wait in line, and showing that City services can be accessible, convenient, and built around the people we serve. This is one more way we're saying thank you to the veterans who call Chicago home."

Veterans who are new applicants will still need to visit an Office of the City Clerk location in-person to verify their veteran status by presenting their unexpired State ID or driver's license with a veteran designation and their vehicle registration. Those veterans who live in a Residential Parking Zone and want to include it on their City Vehicle Sticker will still need to pay $35 for a one-year term and $70 for a two-year term.

"As a Veteran I am proud to share that our City has a program that allows our Veterans to obtain a FREE City sticker each year in honor their service!" Alderman Christopher Taliaferro (29th Ward) said. "Thank you Clerk, Anna Valencia, for your continued support of our Veterans!"
