For nearly four decades, Cameron University has brought industry experts to southwest Oklahoma to present information to farmers and ranchers engaged in beef cattle production. That longstanding tradition continues Nov. 12 with the 38th installment of the CU Beef Cattle Improvement Conference.
The conference will provide an evening of education, dinner and valuable information to help protect Oklahoma's beef cattle industry.
The topic of this year's conference is "Understanding New World Screwworms: Risks, Recognition and Response," presented by Dr. Jonathan A. Cammack, an assistant professor in the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology at Oklahoma State University. Cammack is also the State Extension Specialist for Livestock Entomology and Parasitology, and teaches undergraduate courses in livestock entomology and forensic entomology at OSU.
"This topic is relevant to more than just agriculture students and livestock producers," said Destiny Wahweah, an ag instructor at Cameron and coordinator of the conference. "Anyone interested in wildlife biology, animal science, veterinary medicine and companion animal care can also benefit from learning about this pest and its potential effects on different animal populations."
"Whether you work with livestock, study wildlife, or simply have pets at home, understanding animal health risks and how to recognize potential concerns is valuable knowledge," Wahweah added.
The conference will take place in the McCasland Family Ballroom, located on the second floor of the McMahon Centennial Complex, 501 SW University Dr. in Lawton. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m.
Cameron University sponsored its first Beef Cattle Improvement Conference in 1987. Since the beef industry is one of the largest in southwest Oklahoma and of vital interest to the area economy, the conference also supports Cameron's strategic plan to strengthen the economic, cultural and civic life of its service area.
Pre-registration is required for the conference. For more information - including how to register online - visit https://www.cameron.edu/ag-bio-health/events/annual-beef-cattle-improvement-conference. Registration closes Sunday, Nov. 1.
