Changes to Maternity Care CPT Codes for 2027

TO: All Maternity Care Providers (MCPs)

RE: Changes to Maternity Care CPT Codes for 2027

Effective January 1, 2027, global maternity care CPT codes will be retired and replaced with new maternity care CPT codes, established by the American Medical Association (AMA).

Maternity Care CPT Code Guidance

  • Alabama Medicaid Agency (Medicaid) will transition to the new maternity care CPT codes on January 1, 2027.
  • MCPs should use the appropriate global maternity care CPT codes for services that occur in 2026 and the new maternity care CPT codes for services that occur in 2027.
  • If a beneficiary receives all prenatal services and delivers on or before December 31, 2026, use the existing global maternity care CPT codes. In this instance, postpartum visits will be included with the global reimbursement fee.
  • If a beneficiary receives prenatal care on or before December 31, 2026, and delivers on or after January 1, 2027, providers should use the appropriate antepartum global CPT codes for services prior to January 1, 2027 (as detailed in the chart below) and use the new maternity care CPT codes for services rendered on or after January 1, 2027.
