Assessor’s Office Earns Special Award for Modernization and Innovation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
October 28, 2026

The Los Angeles County Assessor's Office has reached a major milestone, earning a prestigious award recognizing decades of innovation that have fundamentally transformed how the office serves the public.

At the 39th Annual Los Angeles County Productivity and Quality Awards, the Assessor Modernization Project (AMP) received the Commission Special Award for Process Improvement.

"This is a major milestone for the Assessor's Office and a proud moment for our entire team," Assessor Jeff Prang said. "Since I took office in 2014, we have worked tirelessly to develop and implement AMP. The transition from our outdated legacy system to this modern platform was seamless, and the new technology has improved employee workflows while allowing us to serve property owners faster and more effectively."

The project involved developing a new, cloud-based assessment platform and digitizing 2.4 million property files. AMP officially went live in August 2024, marking a major transformation for an office that had relied on decades-old technology and paper-based processes.

Since its launch, AMP has improved assessment accuracy, expanded online services, streamlined operations, and strengthened the office's ability to deliver property tax relief to wildfire survivors. The result is a more efficient, accessible, and responsive organization.

The benefits have been substantial. The office's primary constitutional responsibility is to prepare the annual Assessment Roll, which establishes the assessed value of properties throughout Los Angeles County. With AMP, the 2026 Assessment Roll was completed in days rather than the weeks or months required under the previous system.

AMP's impact has also drawn national attention. A GovTech case study, Trial by Fire: How Modernization Helped Los Angeles County Speed Tax Relief to Homeowners After the 2025 Wildfires, examined how the Assessor's Office used its modernized technology to help thousands of homeowners affected by the devastating January 2025 wildfires.

The case study highlights how cloud-based infrastructure, data analytics, and artificial intelligence enabled the office to reassess more than 18,000 properties in just 90 days. Under the former system, that process could have taken more than a year. The accelerated assessments helped deliver property tax relief to affected residents while preserving critical County revenue.

Beyond the immediate response to the wildfires, the case study demonstrates how a deliberate, phased modernization strategy, supported by strong data governance and close collaboration between technical and business teams, positioned the Assessor's Office to respond with greater speed, accuracy, and transparency during a crisis.

The Commission Special Award recognizes not only a successful technology project, but also the dedication and forward-thinking approach of the employees who helped transform the Assessor's Office and strengthen its service to the people of Los Angeles County.
