All Chicago Public Schools (CPS) will be closed on Friday January 23, 2026 due to severe weather. Classes will not be in session and CPS buildings will be closed to the public.
CPS made the decision to cancel classes Friday after closely monitoring the forecast for the past 24 hours in collaboration with the City of Chicago's Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC) and other City agencies. With dangerously frigid temperatures expected tomorrow and a Warning from the National Weather Service that wind chills could reach -35 degrees, it will be unsafe for students and staff to travel to school. Dangerously cold wind chills can cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes.
In addition to the cancellation of classes, all extracurricular activities, including athletic practices, games and events scheduled for Friday will be canceled. There will be no remote learning for students on Friday, January 23. CPS expects that classes will resume for all students on Monday, January 26 and any missed athletic competitions will be rescheduled. OEMC and the National Weather service is advising the public to remain inside and limit unnecessary trips outdoors.
Chicago is also operating several warming centers that can be accessed throughout the winter months. Click here for complete details on these centers, or call 3-1-1 for information on where to take shelter from the cold. Please visit cps.edu for all weather updates regarding CPS schools.
