Council approves park, recreation center rehabilitation and other projects and programs designed to benefit the community

The City Council on Tuesday approved plans for park and recreation center rehabilitation projects as well as a proposed program that fosters community connections.

Plans and specifications for the Barbadanes Park Play Area Rehabilitation project were approved. The new play area improvements are designed to include an array of play elements and seating opportunities with the overall park providing improved ADA access and sidewalk circulation.

Council Members also approved plans and specifications for the Sierra Recreation Center Tennis Court Rehabilitation project. The existing courts need rehabilitation due to the age and condition of the court surface and concrete pad. The project would replace the concrete court pad to provide the best long-term approach for improving the condition, functionality, and usability of the court area.

As part of the fiscal year 2025-26 budget review, the City Council previously authorized funding for the Marguerite Aquatics, Tennis and Recreation Center Surface Parking Lot Expansion efforts. On Tuesday, the plans for the project were approved. The parking lot expansion would address immediate parking needs and help reduce on-street parking during special events at the Marguerite Aquatics, Tennis, and Recreation Center as well as the Oso Creek Golf Course.

In other news, Council Members approved a new Block Party Program for the City. Block parties are a traditional way for neighbors to come together and socialize. They are beneficial in promoting goodwill, cooperation, awareness, and safety. Developed by the Community Services Commission, the program is designed to foster community connections, increase social interactions, enhance public safety, and provide family-friendly activities.

During the presentation part of the meeting, the Council recognized the proactive efforts of the Mission Viejo Sports and Events Tourism Committee in bringing athletes from the Netherlands and many other countries around the world to train here in preparation for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Games.
