Wilkes University has introduced a new curriculum for its master's program for instructional technology. Designed for working professionals, the online master of science degree offers new concentrations that align with a variety of personal and professional education goals, including a track that's designed for corporate learning and development specialists.

"The new concentration in instructional design and development supports professionals who are interested in growing their skills in corporate training and learning or may wish to pivot into a new career where instructional design skills are in-demand," says Deborah Zbegner, dean of the College of Health and Education. "The revised curriculum is yet another example of how Wilkes is meeting the need for qualified educators, in all learning settings, while ensuring that graduates are well-prepared to be technology leaders within their district, university or organization."

In addition to the new concentration in instructional design and development, Wilkes will offer a new endorsement in AI, designed to meet Pennsylvania Department of Education competencies.

"The new instructional technology program with the five different master's pathways is crucial to better align the program to meet the needs and goals of what current educators need within the changing landscape of education," says Matt Treese, program coordinator for the master's program in instructional technology and faculty of practice in the Dr. Richard Abbas Alley School of Education. "Each pathway in the instructional technology program addresses specific needs in the PK-12 environment while also offering a private sector training and development option for those who wish to pursue careers in fields outside of PK-12."

Students may pursue graduate degrees with the following concentrations:

  • A master of science degree with a focus on PK-12 instructional technology
  • A master of science degree with a focus on instructional design and development
  • A master of science degree with a focus on PK-12 instructional technology and an optional PDE IT specialist certification or PDE AI endorsement
  • A master of science degree with a focus on PK-12 instructional technology and both the PDI IT specialist certification and AI endorsement

Students entering the program with an existing master's degree may pursue a post-master's PDE IT specialist certification or PDE AI endorsement, with the option to earn both. Pennsylvania educators can also complete the AI endorsement as a standalone program.

By the completion of the program, graduates will be prepared to effectively use and implement technology at every level of education from PK-12 to university to government and private industry. Coursework can be completed online in accelerated, seven-week sessions that allow working professionals to earn their degrees at their own pace.

"This redeveloped program is a testament of Wilkes University's commitment to meeting the needs of students here and now," says Treese, noting that Wilkes will be one of the first ten colleges and universities in Pennsylvania to be approved to offer PDE's new AI endorsement. "As education changes rapidly, it is important to remain current and relevant to help prospective students make the decision of why choosing a Wilkes graduate education program is the right choice."
