UWL's Samantha Brown discovers community, confidence through Rec Sports
Samantha Brown arrived at UW-La Crosse as a proud first-generation student, but without a clear roadmap for what college life would look like.
That sense of uncertainty transformed into confidence when she found her place at the Recreational Eagle Center (REC).
Through her role in Rec Sports, Brown not only found a job, but also a community that helped her grow. Working at the REC opened doors to new connections, including her introduction to the rugby team.
"I met some of the girls through working at the REC," she says. "I went to my first practice, and the team was extremely welcoming. I immediately fell in love with it."
Over time, Brown stepped into a leadership role as a student coordinator, an experience that strengthened her confidence and skills.
Mentorship also played a key role in her journey. Brown credits REC professional staff member Nick Berg with helping her recognize her potential. Through his guidance, she learned how to lead with purpose and support those around her.
Looking back, Brown says her involvement with Rec Sports has shaped both her college experience and her sense of belonging.
"These experiences have shown me that the community doesn't just happen; you build it by showing up, being open to new opportunities and surrounding yourself with people who challenge and support you," she says. "You belong here, and there are people and opportunities waiting for you. You just have to take that first step."
