October 5-11 is National Fire Prevention Week! The San José Fire Department would like to remind community members to be vigilant when using lithium-ion batteries. These rechargeable batteries power many devices that we commonly use every day, such as cellphones and laptops. While convenient, lithium-ion batteries can overheat, catch fire, release toxic gases, or even explode if damaged or improperly used, charged, or stored. Knowing how to use and charge them safely helps protect your home and family. To reduce your risk, remember these three key steps: Buy Safely: Buy only products that have been tested and certified by a nationally recognized safety lab. Many products sold online and in stores may not meet safety standards and could increase the risk of fire. Charge Safely: When charging, always use the cable or charger that came with the device, place it on a hard surface such as a desk, and unplug it once it's fully charged. Dispose Safely: Never throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash or recycling bin, as they can cause fires. All batteries should be disposed of as hazardous waste. San José residents can take advantage of Santa Clara County's household hazardous waste (HHW) disposal program by scheduling a free drop-off appointment at
https://www.HHW.org. In case of emergency: Stop using a lithium-ion battery if you notice an odor, change in color, too much heat, change in shape, leaking, or odd noises. If you can do so safely, move the device away from anything flammable and call 9-1-1. Together, we can keep our homes and community safe from battery-related fires.
