Durbin Statement On The 25th Anniversary Of The 9/11 Terrorist Attacks

CHICAGO - U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) released the following statement on the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001:

"Twenty-five years ago today, I vividly recall looking down the National Mall from the Capitol Building and watching as black smoke billowed up from the Pentagon. That image is seared into my mind. But what I also remember about that day was the outpouring of compassion and common purpose that united us.

"Twenty-five years after that devastating day, we still mourn the 2,977 innocent lives lost at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, including the heroic members of the New York City Fire Department, law enforcement officers, and military personnel.

"Today, as we reflect on how those acts of pure evil forever altered our sense of security and safety, let us also reflect on the importance of remaining faithful to our values and the Constitution while protecting the American people. The victims of 9/11, their loved ones, and the American people deserved justice and accountability long ago."

Today, Durbin attended the City of Chicago Fire Department's 9/11 Tribute, marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The formal memorial tribute at Navy Pier faced east toward New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania to honor the lives lost and remember the firefighters, paramedics, police officers, and other first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice.
