I-30 westbound ramp changes scheduled

As construction on the Interstate 30 (I-30) widening project continues, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is alerting travelers to ramp changes along the westbound corridor, where work is currently taking place.

The contractor will begin the process of closing two I-30 westbound entrance ramps midday on Monday, February 23.

Ramps include the I-30 westbound entrance ramp east of Richmond Road. To access I-30 west, motorists will use the entrance ramp east of Farm to Market Road (FM) 989/Kings Highway. Drivers traveling south to U.S. Highway 59 (U.S. 59) /Interstate 369 (I-369) will travel to University Avenue and use the U-turn bridge.

The second ramp scheduled to close is the U.S. 59/I-369 northwest entrance ramp to I-30 west. Motorists traveling the U.S. 59/I-369 northwest ramp to access I-30 will exit at University Avenue, travel the frontage road and use the entrance ramp east of Kings Highway.

On Friday, February 20, the I-30 westbound entrance ramp east of FM 989/Kings Highway was scheduled to be reopened.

Also on Friday, February 20, the I-30 entrance ramp west of FM 989/Kings Highway was scheduled to be closed.

TxDOT reminds local commuters that the I-30 frontage road system allows traffic to travel eastbound from FM 989/Kings Highway to U.S. Highway 71 (U.S. 71) /State Line Avenue and westbound from U.S. 71/State Line Avenue to FM 989/Kings Highway continuously, without ever stopping at a traffic signal.

TxDOT urges all drivers to slow down, stay alert and obey posted signage when driving through road construction or maintenance areas. TxDOT's "Be Safe. Drive Smart." campaign offers safe driving tips for navigating work zones:

• Slow down. Follow the posted speed limit and never drive faster than what is safe for road conditions. Excessive speed is a leading cause of work zone crashes.
• Pay attention. Avoid distractions, keep your mind on the road and put your phone away.
• Watch out for road crews. Roadside workers want to get home safely, too. Always follow instructions and be mindful of construction area road signs.
• Don't tailgate. Traffic in work zones can slow suddenly. Give yourself room to stop in a hurry. Rear-end collisions are the most common type of work zone crashes.
• Allow extra time. Road construction can slow things down. Count on it and plan for it.
