MSU Extension offers class on Fall garden clean-up

As summer gardens begin to fade and cooler temperatures arrive, many gardeners wonder what tasks are truly necessary before winter sets in. Michigan State University Extension invites gardeners of all experience levels to attend "Fact or Fiction: The Fall Garden Clean Up To-Do List" on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the MSU Extension Macomb County office located at 21885 Dunham Road, Entrance "E" in Clinton Township.

Fall gardening advice often comes with a long checklist of chores, but not every recommendation is essential. During this informative session, participants will learn which clean-up tasks are critical for maintaining healthy gardens, which activities are optional, and which common practices are simply gardening myths.

"MSU Extension's Fall garden clean-up class is a great example of the types of practical, real-world educational offerings that are available through MSU Extension," said Andrew Cox, Director/Health Officer of the Macomb County Department of Health and Community Services. "Regardless of the season, MSU Extension has timely information and solutions for everyone."

According to Kristi Evans, District Director of MSU Extension in Macomb County, "When it comes to gardening, David is our subject matter expert. He also leads Macomb's Extension Master Gardener volunteer program and is the manager of our pest and insect diagnostic lab in Macomb County."

The program will also feature an interactive component, allowing attendees to submit their own garden clean-up questions in advance for discussion during the class. Participants can discover whether their favorite gardening tips are based on fact or fiction.

The class will be led by David Lowenstein, Ph.D., Consumer Horticulture Educator for MSU Extension in Macomb County. An entomologist by training, Lowenstein specializes in integrated pest management, plant diagnostics, and ornamental grasses. He works with home gardeners and communities to promote practical, research-based horticultural practices.
