FDA issues early alert for heart pump controllers following 3 deaths, dozens of injuries

The Food and Drug Administration has issued an early alert for all automated Impella controllers by Abiomed following an issue that has caused three deaths and 37 serious injuries as of Aug. 17. The alert was issued due to the products experiencing purge cassette recognition issues resulting from failures of the purge flag component within the purge pressure sensor assembly. Abiomed sent a letter to all affected customers recommending the devices be removed from where they are used or sold.
