Safety project planned for US 62/180 and FM 2055

SEMINOLE - The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is set to begin work on a project that will make roadway improvements to more than 16 miles of US 62/180 and FM 2055 in Gaines County. The $8.2 million project will add deceleration lanes at crossovers along US 62/180, from CR 237 to CR 319, and widen curves along FM 2055, from FM 2056 to FM 1757.

Construction work to US 62/180 is scheduled to begin Tuesday, January 27. Contractor James Hamilton, Co., of Silver City, NM, is heading up the work to make safety improvements, said Seve Sisneros, P.E., TxDOT Brownfield Area engineer.

"The project will impact US 62/180 traffic with various daily inside lane closures and brief crossover closures. Our goal is to make sure we get the work done in the safest and most efficient way possible," Sisneros said.

Drivers should anticipate the speed limit to be reduced to 60 mph through the active work zone, lane closures, are urged to use caution since crews will be working in close proximity to traffic, and should keep the following tips in mind:

  • Slow down and always follow posted work zone speed limits. Speeding is one of the major causes of work zone crashes. Remember, traffic fines double in work zones.
  • Pay attention. Workers and heavy equipment may only be a few feet from passing vehicles.
  • Be patient. Delays from roadway construction can be frustrating, but it only takes a few extra minutes when you slow down for a work zone.

The project is anticipated to be completed in fall 2026.
