SEATTLE - People traveling to and through the greater Puget Sound region Halloween weekend, Oct. 30-Nov. 2, should plan ahead for two major construction projects that will require full closures of northbound Interstate 5 in Seattle and southbound I-405 in Bothell.
Crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will close all lanes of northbound I-5 from I-90 to Northeast 45th Street from 11:59 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, to 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2. Adjacent ramps and lanes will close as early as 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30. Express lanes will remain northbound only until returning to normal operations at 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2.
During the full closure, crews will remove the Revive I-5: Ship Canal Bridge Preservation project work zone in the two right northbound lanes of the bridge. Some remaining work and the removal of the work zone require dry conditions. If the weather does not cooperate, the long-term lane reductions will remain in place until crews have a suitable weekend to complete the work.
Crews working for WSDOT will close all lanes of southbound I-405 from State Route 527 to SR 522 in Bothell starting at 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, to 4 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2. A detour will be in place, and adjacent ramps also will close.
During the full closure, crews will remove a portion of the pedestrian bridge at the Canyon Park Park and Ride as part of the I-405/Brickyard to SR 527 Improvement Project. The following weekend, Nov. 6-9, crews are planning to close all lanes of northbound I-405 from SR 522 to SR 527 to remove the portion of the pedestrian bridge over the northbound lanes. The pedestrian bridge needs to be removed to make space to expand I-405 through Bothell.
The pedestrian bridge at the Canyon Park Park and Ride will close at 12:01 a.m. Friday, Oct. 30. It will remain closed until a new bridge opens in 2028. Travelers needing to cross I-405 can take transit routes 106 or 120 or follow signs for the temporary construction shuttle. The southbound ST 532 and ST 525 will board at temporary Bay B inside the park and ride. More information about the transit reroute is available on the Community Transit blog.
With a major closure on both main north/south routes through the Puget Sound area people should plan ahead for delays as travelers adjust their routes. People traveling are encouraged to find an alternate route, carpool, leave early or stay late, allow for more travel time or try a different travel mode like transit or bike. These choices can make a meaningful difference during major closures and help keep both travelers and highway crews safe.
