Traffic calming projects begin: Studebaker Road and Palo Verde Avenue

Published on April 17, 2026

Traffic calming work is beginning on two Lakewood streets, with construction starting Monday, April 20 on Studebaker Road and continuing on Palo Verde Avenue.

While the projects differ in timing and scope, both follow the same approach: test improvements, evaluate how they perform and use that information to guide future permanent changes.

Studebaker Road project

Work begins Monday, April 20 on Studebaker Road between Del Amo Boulevard and Centralia as part of a traffic improvement pilot project.

This corridor has been identified for safety improvements due to its width and higher travel speeds. The pilot will test changes designed to slow traffic, improve visibility and create a more predictable roadway for drivers and pedestrians.

What to expect

  • Temporary lane adjustments
  • Some parking impacts
  • Traffic control in the area, especially near intersections and park access points

The pilot will include a temporary roadway layout with lane reductions, updated striping and signage, improved visibility at intersections and temporary roundabouts at three locations.

Additional elements include temporary curb features, ADA ramps and a new parking lot adjacent to Rynerson Park.

Palo Verde Avenue project

A similar pilot project is planned for Palo Verde Avenue between South Street and Carson Street, with work expected to begin in May.

This project will test potential safety improvements, including a temporary roundabout and lane reconfiguration at Palo Verde and Candlewood.

What to expect

  • A temporary roundabout at Candlewood Street
  • New striping for parking and bike lanes
  • Painted curb extensions (bulb-outs)
  • A center median to help manage turns

Unlike Studebaker, some elements-such as roadway resurfacing and new curb ramps-will be permanent from the start.

Existing ramps will not be removed until the roundabout is made permanent, should the pilot be successful.

Roundabouts

What is a roundabout?

A roundabout is a circular intersection where traffic moves counterclockwise around a center island. Drivers slow down, yield before entering and travel through at lower speeds.

Why use them?

Roundabouts are designed to:

  • Slow traffic
  • Reduce severe crashes
  • Improve traffic flow

How to use a roundabout

  • Slow down as you approach
  • Yield to traffic already in the roundabout
  • Enter when clear and travel counterclockwise
  • Signal when exiting

If you miss your exit, continue around and take the next one.
