Spielbüchler wrote his post-doctoral thesis at the Institute of New History and Contemporary History. The work with the title "Panafrikanismus im Schatten des Kalten Kriegs" (Pan-Africanism in the shadow of Cold War) examines the covered impact of the Unites States on the establishment of the Organization of African Unity 1963.

Those pursuing a habilitation undergo an academic evaluation of their particular aptitude for independent academic research and teaching the entire depth and breadth of their selected subject area. This is the prerequisite for being granted authorization to teach that particular subject area [venia docendi].

About the person
Spielbüchler studied History and Political Education at the University of Salzburg, where he earned his PhD in 2003. After a few years as a freelance journalist with focus on centers of conflicts, he became a university assistant in 2007 at the Institute of New History and Contemporary History at the University of Innsbruck. This was followed by a lectureship position at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa, before he changed to the JKU in 2011 to become a senior lecturer at the Institute of New History and Contemporary History.
