Randy Gammell is a current member of the Defense Logistics Agency Weapons Support (Columbus) Pathways to Career Excellence program. He began his PaCE journey in September 2024 and will graduate September 2026 as an Inventory Management Specialist.
Why did you first apply to the PaCE program?
I applied to the PaCE program because I was looking for an opportunity that combined professional development, mentorship and meaningful, hands-on experience.
What is your professional background?
My professional background includes eight years in law enforcement and one year as a product data specialist. These roles were service-oriented roles where I worked with diverse teams, managed responsibilities independently and developed strong communication and problem-solving skills.
How would you describe the PaCE program to someone unfamiliar with it?
The PaCE program is a structured professional development experience that provides participants with hands-on learning, mentorship and exposure to career-building opportunities. It's designed to help individuals grow their skills, confidence and professional network while contributing to meaningful projects.
What are the biggest challenges you face in your role? How do you overcome them?
One of the biggest challenges is managing competing priorities while meeting deadlines and maintaining quality work. I overcome this by being organized, communicating proactively and breaking larger tasks into manageable steps. Seeking feedback and support when needed also helps me stay on track.
What's something that most people don't know about your job?
Many people don't realize how much behind-the-scenes planning, coordination and problem-solving goes into the role. Even tasks that appear straightforward often require adaptability, attention to detail and collaboration with others.
What makes a good fit for someone in your position?
A good fit is someone who can be adaptable, proactive and eager to learn. Strong communication skills, reliability and a willingness to take initiative are essential, along with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
What trends do you see shaping your job role in the future?
I see emphasis on AI technology, data-driven decision-making and cross-functional collaboration shaping this role.
