This week on New Mexico in Focus, U.S. Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez, D-NM, dropped by the studio before returning to Washington D.C. Host Nash Jones spoke with the congresswoman about the war in Iran and the position she and her Democratic colleagues are in, as the minority party in a Congress, that never formally authorized military action in the first place. Leger Fernandez also spoke about the Trump administration's plans to roll back protections for public lands in her district.
A month has passed since a New York Times investigation revealed decades of alleged sexual abuse and child rape by Cesar Chavez, reigniting thorny conversations around the Chicano labor organizer's legacy. NMIF reporter Cailley Chella delves into what that's looked like in New Mexico - home state of fellow labor leader Dolores Huerta, who's now disclosed her own account of Chavez raping her - and a generational divide that emerged in her reporting.
NMIF runs through the latest on some eye-popping campaign finance numbers in the gubernatorial race, as well as reviewing a grim forecast for this year's fire season.
Last week, NMIF dove deep on the new leadership at the Albuquerque Police Department (APS). Daniel Williams, a policy advocate with the ACLU of New Mexico, had a civil rights-focused conversation with Executive Producer Jeff Proctor on the police department's new top brass. This week, NMIF picks back up with Williams and Proctor chatting about privacy concerns surrounding police use of technology and surveillance tools.
NMiF airs on NMPBS 5.1 (KNME HD) on Friday, April 17, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 19 at 7 a.m. and streaming on the PBS video app. Involved, informed, in-depth media: watch New Mexico in Focus again online shortly thereafter.
