Culver, Pisciottano Bill Strengthening Medical Imaging Standards Passes Senate

HARRISBURG - The Senate today approved legislation sponsored by Sen. Lynda Schlegel Culver (R-27) and Sen. Nick Pisciottano (D-45) to create a state licensure process for medical imaging professionals in Pennsylvania.

Senate Bill 1334 would create a consistent statewide licensing structure for professionals who perform medical imaging and radiation therapy procedures.

"Senate Bill 1334 is about patient safety," Culver said. "Medical imaging plays an essential role in diagnosing and treating patients, and Pennsylvanians should be able to feel confident that the person performing these procedures meets clear and consistent professional standards."

Medical imaging includes highly technical procedures such as x-rays, MRIs, ultrasounds, CT scans and radiation therapy. While Pennsylvania currently regulates facilities and equipment through the Department of Environmental Protection, individuals operating radiation-producing equipment are not licensed by the Commonwealth.

Culver said the legislation would address that longstanding gap by ensuring medical imaging professionals have completed accredited education programs, passed nationally recognized examinations and maintain their competency through continuing education.

"This bill does not create an additional exam, require additional schooling or place unnecessary new hurdles in front of qualified professionals," Culver said. "It creates a uniform and enforceable standard that protects patients, provides clarity for employers and supports the professionals already doing this important work."

46 other states have adopted similar requirements for medical imaging professionals.

Senate Bill 1334 now moves to the House of Representatives for consideration.
