Congresswoman Pou Visits Northern Border

BUFFALO, NY - Congresswoman Nellie Pou (D-NJ-09), a member of the House Homeland Security Committee, joined Democratic colleagues in upstate New York to meet with law enforcement leaders and assess security along the United States border with Canada.

Pou was joined by Homeland Security Committee Ranking Member Bennie Thompson (D-MS-02) and fellow committee members Tim Kennedy (D-NY-26) and Lou Correa (D-CA-46).

"While it is sometimes overlooked, our nation's northern border is a critical nexus for commerce and immigration. It was essential for me to see it for myself to get a full picture of how the administration's enforcement policies are being carried out on the ground," said Congresswoman Pou. "I thank our hardworking law enforcement officers at the border for managing a challenging job. Having now visited both borders, I feel as strongly as ever that America's immigration challenges can only be addressed by finding bipartisan solutions and with enforcement grounded in fairness and humanity. That is not happening now and it must change."

While on the trip, Pou and her colleagues also held a press conference to demand greater cooperation from DHS with the homicide probe of Nurul Amin Shah Alam, a New York man who was found dead earlier this year shortly after being released from DHS custody. Up to now, DHS has been blocking meaningful oversight of the tragic case.

Commenting on this case, Pou said: "Nurul Amin Shah Alam's death was a tragic injustice that the Department of Homeland Security wants to sweep under the rug. We will never forget what happened to Mr. Shah Alam and we will never stop fighting for justice for his family and this community."

Soon after her swearing-in, Congresswoman Pou visited the southern border, where she toured homeland security facilities and a detention center, spoke directly with officials with Customs and Border Protection and Homeland Security Investigations, and met with groups that aid arriving migrants.
