The Eide/Dalrymple Gallery at Augustana opens "The Augustana Faculty Biennial," showcasing recent works by university art instructors and faculty, as well as visiting artists. The exhibit will be on view from Thursday, Nov. 5, through Saturday, Dec. 5. A gallery reception will take place from 7-9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6, with a gallery talk at 7:30 p.m.

This show features a variety of artwork - both two- and three-dimensional artwork, including ceramics, digital painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, sculpture, glass, and examples of public art projects. Featured faculty artists include Jana Anderson, Izia Lindsay, Anthony Millette, Chad Nelson '95, Scott Parsons 87, John Henry Peters '76, Anna Reich, Dr. Lindsay Twa, Molly Uravitch and Anna Youngers.

"A large part of this exhibition is showing the wide-array of styles, materials and content with which the art faculty are engaged," noted Twa, chair of the Augustana Art Department and director of the Eide/Dalrymple Gallery. "We hope that our students can be inspired by our multiple pathways; that we're all striving to bring something new to the world, but that we are each on our own journey. And that is also what we hope for in our students."

While each artist approaches their materials and subjects differently, visitors might be surprised by the number of commonalities in the artists' intent and ideas, and how each is in dialogue with each other. Many of the exhibiting artists cited the uncontrollable nature of their work and that intentions must always be in a dance with how the materials respond.

"Sometimes paintings have their own agenda," said painter and visiting instructor of figure drawing Anna Youngers noted.

"My part is trying to stay open as I work and allow the process and material to have their say in the final work. Not just the process, but the aesthetic of the work itself is somewhere on this scale of control and chaos," Ceramicist Anthony Millette, who is teaching Drawing I at Augustana this year.

Additional commonalities include concern for the environment, connections between the individual and the universal, being in dialogue with cultural symbolism and the processing of struggles and trauma. Visitors to the exhibition are invited to find their own connections!
