Crescent Communities Celebrates Grand Opening of First Multifamily Development at The River District

Jun 4 '26

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (June 4, 2026) - Crescent Communities , a nationally recognized, market-leading real estate investor, developer, and operator of mixed-use communities, today announced the grand opening of NOVEL River District , a 318-unit Class-A multifamily community located within The River District , a transformative 1,400-acre master-planned development in West Charlotte. As the first multifamily property to open within The River District, NOVEL River District represents a major milestone in bringing the community's vision to life.

Situated in Westrow, The River District's 70-acre town center, NOVEL River District offers a mix of studio, one-, and two-bedroom apartment homes, paired with a lifestyle centered on outdoor adventure, wellness, and connection. NOVEL River District puts an outdoorsy spin on luxury, combining quartz countertops and designer fixtures with bike storage and barn doors. Nine-foot ceilings and wooden decks give an airy feel to living spaces, while front-load washers and dryers and large kitchen islands ensure easy living.

"NOVEL River District represents a significant step in expanding Charlotte's multifamily offerings with a community designed around how people want to live today," said Michael Tubridy, Crescent Communities' Senior Managing Director for the Carolinas. "As the first multifamily phase within The River District, it brings together walkability, access to nature, and a strong sense of place, all delivered through the quality and experience that define the NOVEL brand."

Designed to reflect The River District's guiding vision, the soul of a city in the heart of nature, the community emphasizes access to the outdoors through curated amenities and programming. Residents enjoy features such as outdoor gathering spaces, access to trails and river activities, and convenient options for renting and storing gear for cycling, kayaking, and more. With an on-site dog park and pavilion to wash four-legged friends and bikes alike, NOVEL River District offers residents ease of access to the outdoors. For those who prefer to spend their outdoor time relaxing, NOVEL River District has a hammock garden, a fireside lounge, and a large recreation lawn.

"The River District is about creating a place that feels connected - to the land, to the river, and to the people who will live and work here," said Rainer Ficken, Senior Managing Director of The River District. "With NOVEL River District, we're beginning to bring that vision to life in a tangible way, setting the foundation for a dynamic, mixed-use community that will evolve over time and become a destination for Charlotte."

In alignment with Crescent Communities' commitment to sustainability and wellness, NOVEL River District has achieved National Green Building Standard (NGBS) Silver certification. The community incorporates environmentally responsible design elements, including energy and water efficiency measures and solar panel installations, contributing to long-term environmental performance and resident well-being. The River District has also been built around the One Planet Living framework, making it the first community in the Southeast and only the third built environment project in the United States to achieve this recognition. The framework guides decisions across energy, materials, food, health, and land use, ensuring conservation is embedded not just in open space, but in how the community functions every day.

Last fall, The River District welcomed its first resident to a David Weekley-designed single-family home in Westrow. Additional single-family homes and townhomes are now under construction and available for purchase. Crescent Communities also recently broke ground on a set of 140 single-family lots in its Basswood neighborhood and Forge Village in Westrow, which will include a playground, a two-acre working farm, a pavilion with an event lawn, and a community building with a café and store selling produce from the farm: all elements that seamlessly blend the community with surrounding nature. From the site of NOVEL River District, residents can see Big Pete, one of the wooden trolls by statue artist Thomas Dambo.

In addition to NOVEL River District, The River District will include around 2,350 multifamily residential units upon completion. In January, local developer Laurel Street closed on 87 mixed-income multifamily units, with delivery expected in early 2027.

More broadly in Charlotte, Crescent Communities recently celebrated the sale of NOVEL Ballantyne and the grand opening at NOVEL Davidson . Its currently leasing multifamily communities in the market include NOVEL University Place and NOVEL Mallard Creek , and its legacy communities include The Atherton , formerly NOVEL Atherton; MAA LoSo , formerly NOVEL LoSo Station; Pointe at Research Park , formerly NOVEL Research Park; 30Six NoDa , formerly NOVEL NoDa; and Emerson Montford Park , formerly NOVEL Montford Place; amongst many others.

Financial partners on NOVEL River District include UMB Financial Corporation . Additional partners include Cooper Carry (architecture), Crescent Communities Construction (construction), Ellinwood + Machado (structural engineer), ENGR3 (MEP engineer), BB+M Architecture (interior design), and Land Design (landscape design and civil engineering).
