Celebration of 35 years of MERCOSUR

Established by the Treaty of Asunción in 1991, MERCOSUR celebrates today, March 26, its 35th anniversary.

Over the past 35 years, intra-bloc trade has increased elevenfold, totaling $51 billion in 2025. In the past three years, free trade agreements have been concluded with Singapore, the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), and the European Union. In 2025, the bloc's external trade flow totaled more than $800 billion, highlighting its growing global integration.

The MERCOSUR Structural Convergence Fund (FOCEM) has helped reduce asymmetries among member countries by financing projects in areas such as infrastructure, productive integration, and social cohesion.

The MERCOSUR Citizenship Statute, in turn, strengthens and formalizes rights that facilitate everyday life for the bloc's citizens, promoting free movement, access to public services, and equal opportunities among nationals of member countries.

Cooperation is also advancing in areas such as fighting organized crime and developing mechanisms for collaboration in public policies, protection of women, and addressing gender-based violence.

As MERCOSUL marks 35 years, Brazil reaffirms the importance of the bloc as an environment for political coordination, the promotion of free trade and sustainable development, and the strengthening of democracy.
