Largest Property Tax Cut Takes Effect

PIERRE, S.D. - Today, Governor Rhoden's property tax cut, which delivers the largest property tax cut in South Dakota history, goes into effect.

"Hard working South Dakotans deserve to keep more of what they make. I was proud to deliver the largest property tax cut in state history," said Governor Larry Rhoden. "As these laws take effect, homeowners will benefit from both statewide and targeted relief. I am grateful for all the legislators and stakeholders who worked together to get this across the finish line."

SB 96 gives people in each county the option to cut their own property taxes, and SB 245 provides statewide property tax relief through the established general education formula. Governor Larry Rhoden previously unveiled a county map that shows savings estimates for SB 96 and SB 245.

Several counties have already expressed excitement about implementing SB 96, and the Department of Revenue has published resources to assist counties as they continue discussing implementation of SB 96.

"Many times in order to make a quick fix, the state will hand local governments a mandate they may or may not be able to fit within their budgets. SB 96 gave counties the option to decide if it fits for them or not," said Meade County Commissioner Gary Deering. "We are currently looking at all of the numbers to decide if this is a good fit for Meade County. I appreciate Governor Rhoden letting local governments decide what is best for the county they represent."

Governor signed these bills at a signing ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda. You can find a photo of that signing here.
