Volunteer Spotlight: Jeff Florey, Stream Team

Tell us a little about yourself.

I'm a lifelong Texan, born and raised in the Mid-Cities. I've worked in local government for most of my professional career and have lived in Fort Worth for close to 10 years. I'm a big fan of craft beer, doughnuts (check out Funky Town Donuts) and all the small businesses in the Near Southside area.

How long have you been volunteering with the City of Fort Worth?

I've been volunteering with Fort Worth's Texas Stream Team since 2022.

What are your main volunteer duties?

I conduct Standard Core inspections of the West Fork Trinity River's water once a month. This data contributes to the Meadow's Center monitoring of water and environmental quality across Texas.

What inspired you to start volunteering?

I've always been interested in sustainability initiatives and wanted to find a local volunteering opportunity that might serve that interest.

What is your favorite thing about volunteering?

My monitoring site is a mile from my house and right by one of my favorite breweries. This opportunity allows me to track a fork of the Trinity River that runs right through my community. I also get to finish up my testing/tracking at Martin House Brewing with a cold beer and great view.

Describe a favorite memory or moment from your time as a volunteer.

While testing certain water conditions, I wear gloves and goggles and have various scientific instruments in front of me, which often catch the eye of people walking by. Whether I'm working on the riverbank or at the brewery, strangers often ask me what I'm doing. After explaining that I am just monitoring this portion of the river for the City, their faces turn from skepticism to relief. It is always great hearing their support for the City in monitoring and improving our waterways.

How has volunteering impacted your life or perspective?

It's great having a monthly appointment that gets me out to the river where I can see the changes of the ecosystem up close. I grew up hiking around the Trinity River, so it's apt that I now regularly assist in tracking the quality of its waters.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about volunteering?

Find something that interests you and give it a shot. The City of Fort Worth has plenty of short-term and long-term opportunities to give back. Besides, if a particular role doesn't work out, you can always try something else.

What do you enjoy in your spare time when you're not volunteering?

I enjoy spending time with friends and family, hopefully outside in pleasant weather. I love reading, exercising and going to the movie theater. I try to support local breweries, music and dive bars when I have time.
