The City of Norman is advising residents that fireworks are still banned inside city limits, even after the passage of the Rockets' Red Glare Act.
The act, which was signed by Gov. Stitt in May, applies only to private property in unincorporated areas of the state and gives cities the authority to regulate fireworks within their city limits.
"Personal fireworks discharge remains prohibited in Norman City limits and could result in tickets or municipal fines," said Fire Marshal Matthew Elliott. "Residents are welcome to attend commercial fireworks displays - such as Norman's Fourth Fest celebration - that are permitted through the City and administered by professionals in a safe, controlled setting."
Thousands of serious injuries are caused by fireworks each year, in addition to substantial property loss. The sites and sounds of fireworks can also cause distress in pets and to neighbors with certain medical conditions or disorders, Elliott said.
Individuals who are unsure whether or not they reside in Norman City Limits, can utilize the Interactive City Council Ward Map to verify. Simply navigate to the magnifying glass icon, click on it and type in your address.
DO NOT call 911 to report fireworks
To keep 911 lines open for life-threatening emergencies, the City of Norman asks residents not to call 911 to report illegal fireworks. 911 should only be called if someone is injured, there is imminent danger, or there is a fire.
If residents know the address where fireworks are being set off, they can call non-emergency dispatch to report it at 405-321-1444.
