Meuser Supports Agriculture Appropriations Bill, Secures Funding for Schuylkill County Courthouse Renovations

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congressman Dan Meuser (PA-09), released the following statement after voting in favor of the FY 2027 Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Related Agencies Appropriations Act. This legislation funds agencies such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and allocates funding to programs that protect our nation's food and drug supply, support America's farmers, ranchers, and rural communities, and ensure low-income Americans have access to nutrition programs.

The bill includes $1.6 million for a Community Funded Project to renovate the Schuylkill County Courthouse. The project will modernize three elevators throughout the courthouse, replace aging exterior doors and windows, replace outdated rooftop HVAC units, install temperature monitoring sensors to improve energy efficiency, and repair retaining walls surrounding the historic courthouse structure.

The bill fully funds Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), the National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, and Summer Food Programs.

The bill prioritizes support for crucial research and safety initiatives at the Department of Agriculture, including $1.1 billion for the Farm Service Agency, $1.226 billion for the Food Safety and Inspection Service, $1.642 billion for the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, and $1.795 billion for the Agricultural Research Service.

The legislation allocates $3.81 billion for rural development programs, prioritizing funding for homeownership and infrastructure lending, and invests $40 million for the Reconnect Rural Broadband Program.

Additionally, the bill provides crucial protections to secure America's food supply chain, which includes making the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture a member of the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), allowing the Secretary to review transactions that involve agricultural land, biotechnology, transportation, storage, and processing with a particular emphasis on foreign adversaries like China, North Korea, Russia, and Iran.

"With the passage of the Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, House Republicans are delivering on our promise to put American farmers, ranchers, and rural communities first," said Congressman Meuser. "But this legislation doesn't just deliver much-needed investments that support American agriculture, it also delivers nutrition assistance to those who need it most, protects our food supply and American farmland from foreign interference, and provides funding for renovations to the historic Schuylkill County Courthouse. I'm proud to have played a role in securing this funding for American farmers and for important projects in our district."

"Thank you to Congressman Meuser and his staff for working with the County to secure funding for much-needed repairs to the courthouse," said Larry Padora, Chair of the Schuylkill County Board of Commissioners. "These improvements addressed critical infrastructure needs while helping ease the financial burden on local taxpayers. As a result, the County can now direct those resources toward other important priorities and initiatives that benefit our residents. This funding will help preserve this historic building for future generations while ensuring that Schuylkill County residents continue to have access to a safe, functional, and well-maintained courthouse for years to come."

"This is marvelous news. We are fortunate to have a gorgeous, majestic courthouse with a one-of-a-kind clock tour," said Schuylkill County Commissioner Barron Hetherington. "While our administration has worked diligently to maintain the building, critical upgrades to the windows and HVAC system have become increasingly urgent. Thank you to Congressman Meuser for always being there for Schuylkill County."

"I appreciate the efforts of Congressman Meuser. The courthouse is an old, historic building, and I have always said that it is the people's house," said Schuylkill County Commissioner Gary Hess. "It is our responsibility to ensure that it remains well-maintained and operating smoothly, not only for the residents we serve today but for future generations as well. This funding will help us accomplish those goals by allowing us to make critical improvements while preserving an important piece of Schuylkill County's history."

The FY 2027 Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Related Agencies Appropriations Act passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 213 - 210. The bill now heads to the Senate for consideration.
