STATEMENT: Federal Emergency Declaration Approved for Guam Ahead of Typhoon Bavi
(Hagåtña, Guam) - Congressman James Moylan, issued the following statement highlighting federal coordination efforts following approval of a federal Emergency Declaration for Guam ahead of Typhoon Bavi: "My office has just been notified by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) that a federal Emergency Declaration for Guam has been approved ahead of Typhoon Bavi. This declaration authorizes FEMA to provide direct federal assistance for emergency protective measures should conditions warrant.
FEMA also informed my office that multiple federal response teams and personnel have already been pre-positioned to Guam in anticipation of the storm. A National Incident Management Assistance Team (IMAT) is already on Guam, with additional logistics personnel and other federal staff deploying to the island ahead of deteriorating weather conditions. FEMA also has liaison officers embedded within the Guam Emergency Operations Center to coordinate closely with local emergency management officials.
To support response efforts, FEMA officials have confirmed that their Distribution Center on Guam is fully stocked with approximately 1.1 million liters of water, 1.2 million meals, 6,700 cots, 15,300 blankets, 972 tarps, 90 generators, and other critical emergency supplies that can be deployed if needed.
These proactive measures demonstrate the importance of preparing before a storm strikes. Preparedness saves lives. While we all hope Typhoon Bavi's impacts are minimal, it is encouraging to see our federal and local partners working together to ensure Guam is ready. I encourage every resident to complete any remaining preparations, stay informed through official weather updates, and follow the guidance of Guam Homeland Security/Office of Civil Defense.
