The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps income-eligible households manage the cost of utility services, including natural gas, propane, and electricity. The program provides one-time payments made directly to energy providers on behalf of qualifying recipients.
Applications are officially open and will remain open through August 15, 2026, or until funds are exhausted. In total, the program will provide $240 million to eligible families to assist with natural gas, propane, electricity bills and furnace assistance.
Illinois House Minority Leader Tony McCombie is urging residents in need to explore assistance through LIHEAP, a proven resource for helping families manage energy costs.
Last year alone, LIHEAP provided critical support to 341,303 Illinois households, offering an average benefit of $686 per home between October 2024 and August 2025. This assistance helped ease the burden of heating and cooling expenses for families across the state.
Leader McCombie emphasized the importance of applying early and encouraged eligible residents to take advantage of the program as colder months approach.
Families most in need will be given priority. A chart with eligible income thresholds can be found on the webpage. Residents can apply by visiting the DCEO website or by visiting their local agency. Families can also call 1-833-711-0374 for assistance.
