The European Union has taken over the chairmanship of the Agricultural Market Information System (AMIS), following the conclusion of the 29th session of the AMIS Global Food Market Information Group held on 4-5 June 2026 at FAO headquarters in Rome. The handover from Canada marks the start of a new one-year term during which the European Union, represented by Ms Catherine Geslain-Lanéelle from DG Agri, will preside over AMIS meetings and support the initiative's continued work on global food market transparency.
The transition in leadership comes at a time of heightened uncertainty in global agricultural markets, underlining the importance of AMIS as a platform for information sharing and policy dialogue among major producing and consuming countries. Participants in AMIS contribute to the system through the regular provision of market and policy information, helping to underpin a shared understanding of global supply and demand conditions and their short-term outlook.
AMIS operates as a collaborative effort between participating countries and a joint Secretariat composed of international organizations, each contributing data, analytical capacity and domain expertise. Hosted at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Rome, the Secretariat supports the preparation of market assessments and coordinates the work of the Information Group and the Rapid Response Forum. The initiative was established in 2011 at the request of the G20 to enhance food market transparency and strengthen policy coordination in times of market stress.
The Global Food Market Information Group-the technical body of AMIS-meets regularly to review market developments and exchange information on supply, demand, prices and policies affecting the main AMIS commodities. Outcomes of the recent session, including a detailed assessment of current market conditions, are available in the corresponding event page on the AMIS website.
