BGMC recognized for excellence with ACC Cardiac Cath Lab Accreditation with PCI

Buffalo General Medical Center (BGMC) has earned Cardiac Cath Lab Accreditation with Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) from the American College of Cardiology (ACC), recognizing the Cardiac Cath Lab team's commitment to providing high-quality, evidence-based care for patients undergoing cardiac catheterization and PCI procedures.

The accreditation follows a rigorous evaluation of the Cardiac Cath Lab's ability to evaluate, diagnose and treat patients. The process examines care throughout the patient journey, including patient assessment, procedure preparation, sedation, infection prevention, radiation safety and recovery.

PCI, also known as coronary angioplasty, is a minimally invasive procedure used to open narrowed or blocked coronary arteries. During the procedure, a small balloon is used to restore blood flow through the artery. PCI can relieve symptoms of heart disease and can also help limit heart damage during or after a heart attack.

Earning ACC Cardiac Cath Lab Accreditation with PCI demonstrates BGMC's commitment to consistent processes, patient safety and continuous improvement. The accreditation process includes a gap analysis, a review of care practices, the development of an action plan, a rigorous on-site evaluation and ongoing monitoring to support continued quality.

For patients, the accreditation indicates that the Cardiac Cath Lab has established processes and practices to support safe, coordinated care. It also recognizes the work of physicians, nurses, technologists and other team members who are committed to providing high-quality care from preparation through recovery and follow-up.
