Dentons Davis Brown recently joined Drake University Law School Legal Clinic to co-host the fourth annual LGBTQ+ Free Legal Clinic.
Dentons and Drake partnered with law students, professors, and volunteers to help members of the Iowa LGBTQ+ community with legal name changes. The group was able to help 19 clients, both on the day of the clinic and through ongoing follow-up support by student attorneys in the Drake Law Children's Rights Clinic.
"The Drake Law students who partner with us have come to rely on the Clinic each year, and they consistently comment how much they value working alongside DDB volunteers," said Dentons shareholder Breanna Young, "The collaboration, mentorship, and community spirit on display each year really are a testament to the impact of this program."
To make the free clinic a reality, over a dozen Dentons lawyers and staff underwent training and donated a Saturday to help facilitate. Leading up to the clinic, others assisted behind the scenes as well.
One client wrote about their experience, "Every single interaction I had while attending the clinic was among the most genuine and caring experiences, I've been a part of. I felt seen and understood."
The student group Drake OUTlaws raised nearly $1,000 at an open-mic fundraiser for Iowa Trans Mutual Aid. Along with additional support from Drake Law School, they were able to cover the filings fees for everyone who needed help at the clinic. Other community partners included Capital City Pride, Central Iowa Rainbow Families, Common Love DSM, Iowa Safe Schools, and One Iowa.
