FIS ALPINE SKIING WORLD CUP
October 24: Sölden, Austria
- Lara Colturi (ALB) -2nd- and Emma Aicher (GER) -3rd- The 2026-27 FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup kicked off with its traditional opening weekend in Sölden, Austria, on Saturday with the women's Giant Slalom.
- There, in mixed conditions that turned into heavier snow during the second runs, young stars Lara Colturi and Emma Aicher started their campaigns in impressive style by skiing to second and third places behind first-time World Cup winner Paula Moltzan on the United States.
- After scoring four slalom podiums during the 2025-26 season, the 19-year-old talent added a third career GS podium to her tally right off the bat with a superb second run that saw her jump from sixth position to the eventual second place.
- "I was just standing there and I saw that was a bit windy and snowing, and I thought, 'Oh no', but I just said to myself to have fun because the first run I wasn't pushing. The second run I just went for it. It was really tough, super low visibility and it was bumpy," said the Albanian.
- One step lower on the podium in third was Germany's all-rounder Emma Aicher, who celebrated her first-ever GS podium in the opening race of the new season. Previously the downhill and Super-G race winner's weaker discipline, Aicher showed a new level of GS speed and confidence, which will hold her in good stead as she bids to improve on her second place in last season's overall World Cup standings.
