City to conduct prescribed burn May 4

May 1, 2026

The City of Edmonton is taking a proactive approach to wildfire prevention and will conduct a prescribed burn at Jan Reimer Park on May 4, weather permitting.

Smoke will be visible from mid-morning to late afternoon. This is expected and will be monitored to help minimize impacts.

Jan Reimer Park, the Terwillegar Park Footbridge and nearby trails will be closed while wildfire crews complete the controlled operation.

Transport Canada has issued a Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) for this event. Drones are not permitted to fly in this area during the event.

The prescribed burn is part of the City's wildfire prevention effort to proactively reduce wildfire risk. Prescribed burns reduce wildfire fuel, help prevent high-intensity fires, return important nutrients to the ecosystem and increase biodiversity that supports habitat enhancement.

The prescribed burn will proceed only if weather conditions allow for effective fire control and smoke management. Crews will take steps to reduce smoke impacts on nearby communities.
