At the heart ofNew American Symphonies is the first-ever recording of Roy Harris's long-lost trombone symphony, originally written for Tommy Dorsey in 1938. Rehearsed only once by Dorsey's orchestra before being abandoned, the work was never publicly performed and eventually disappeared into the archives. Decades later, Pugh came across references to the piece and launched a years-long search that led him to the Library of Congress, where he uncovered Harris's original manuscripts spread across several boxes of archival materials.
Pugh and Anderson, alongside Grammy-nominated engineer and producer Ulrike Schwarz, have now brought the symphony to life, recording it in DXD and immersive audio at Power Station at BerkleeNYC. The album pairs Harris's rediscovered composition with "Night Suite," a contemporary multi-movement work written specifically for Pugh by composer and former student Scott Ninmer. The project has already earned widespread acclaim. PS Audio's Copper Magazine called the album "ravishing" in its coverage here , and Mix Magazinewrote about the friendship behind the new record here . Additionally, Stereophilepraised the record as "detailed and impactful" with a five-star review you can read here , plus glowing reviews from Positive Feedback ( read here ) and Absolute Sound ( read here ).
