BUY CALIFORNIAN: Governor Newsom launches new campaign to help consumers identify California-made products

Manufacturers can now apply to use the "Made in California" label for their products - leveraging the Golden State's global reputation for quality and innovation

What you need to know: California, the world's fourth-largest economy and the nation's leader in manufacturing jobs, is opening applications for a new statewide platform, "Made in California," to help turn the state's global brand into a competitive advantage.

SACRAMENTO - Governor Gavin Newsom today launched "Made in California", a new statewide labeling and marketing program to empower California manufacturers to capitalize on the state's global reputation for quality. Whether the company makes surfboards or salsa, beer or biotech products, as long as it is substantially made in the Golden State, manufacturers big and small have the opportunity to add the valuable "Made in California" label to their products. And for consumers, the label makes it simple: look for the logo and know you're buying a product made by California workers, right here in California, to California standards.

From aerospace in Southern California to food processing in the Central Valley to semiconductors in the Bay Area - California makes just about everything. And we make it better, faster and at a scale few places in the world can match. 'Made in California' isn't just a label. It's a statement about innovation, opportunity and the people building the future right here in our state - it's a point of pride. So the next time you buy something, check the label, and when you have a choice, buy Californian.

Made in the #1 state for manufacturing jobs: California

Through the launch of "Made in California," the golden state is ensuring that its nation-leading industry can continue to dominate the next chapter of American manufacturing.

  • California manufacturers produce $385 billion annually in economic output in 2025, accounting for 9 percent of the state's total GDP.
  • The state's manufacturers exported $159 billion in goods in 2024.
  • California's 1.24 million manufacturing workers make more than $25,000 above the average non-farm wage, supporting families across the state.
  • The manufacturing jobs multiplier estimates that each manufacturing job supports three more in neighboring communities.
  • Since 2021, California has invested over $215 million in over 675 contracts with employers to train over 194,000 workers in the manufacturing sector.

Starting today, "Made in California" gives these nation-leading producers a public-facing identity. The program, led by the Governor's Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) and the California Office of the Small Business Advocate (CalOSBA), is open to eligible manufacturers operating in California whose products are substantially made within the state - from legacy makers and family-owned businesses to high-growth innovators and advanced manufacturing firms. Eligible manufacturers will be able to use the "Made in California" label and additional program resources to strengthen their visibility with consumers, buyers, retailers, investors, economic development partners, and state and federal contractors.

Supporting small and mid-sized manufacturers

California is home to more small businesses than anywhere else in the nation. Now, small and mid-sized manufacturers stand to gain the most. Small manufacturers alone account for roughly 89 percent of the state's manufacturing firms. Already the engines of local jobs, regional supply chains, and community pride, these businesses often lack the marketing infrastructure of larger companies. "Made in California" closes that gap and helps participating businesses reach new customers, pursue contracts, attract capital, enter export markets and compete for shelf space by turning the state's reputation for quality, innovation and sustainability into a true market advantage.

"Manufacturing is not just part of California's economy - it is one of the critical ways California tells its story," said Dee Dee Myers, Senior Advisor to Governor Newsom and Director of GO-Biz. "This program gives manufacturers an easily recognizable way to show where products are made, who makes them and why California production continues to set the standard across the nation."

World-leading economy

Since Governor Newsom took office, California's annual GDP has grown by more than $1.18 trillion, reaching $4.25 trillion in 2025. First-quarter 2026 economic output reached an annualized $4.4 trillion, following annual GDP gains exceeding $200 billion in each of the previous two years.

California also remains home to more small businesses than Texas or Florida, and continues to be America's startup capital - with more than 4.3 million small businesses employing 7.6 million Californians.

In the first quarter of 2026, California's economy grew at a 3.7% annualized pace - its best quarterly growth ranking since 2013 and one of the fastest growth rates in the nation and well above U.S. growth of 2.1%. Meanwhile, Texas grew 0.9% and Florida 1.6% during the same period.

As the world's fourth largest economy, California continues to lead the nation where it matters most - creating new businesses, attracting venture capital, driving technological innovation, expanding advanced manufacturing, growing high-tech industries, and producing more than any other state. In fact, The Golden State continues to be: #1 state for new business starts, #1 state for high-tech business,#1 state for agriculture, #1 state for venture capital.
