FedEx Expands its Operations in Costa Rica to Support Key Industries

FedEx announces the expansion of its Operations Center as the company celebrates the 25th anniversary of its presence in Costa Rica. Inaugurated in 2022, the FedEx Operations Center has now expanded by 26%, for a total of 12,600 square meters, more than half of El Quijote Logistics Park in Belén de Heredia, where it is located, where it is located.

This latest expansion to the Operations Center includes the addition of last-mile ground operations, complementing the existing import and export operations; the implementation of two temperature-controlled cold rooms, certified under IATA's CEIV program to handle pharmaceutical cargo; and two additional cold rooms in the import area for non-pharmaceutical products. A dedicated area for Special Logistics Services (SEL) was also added.

"This year marks the 25th anniversary of FedEx operations in Costa Rica. This new investment drives greater capacity and operational efficiency to meet the growing market demand and help strengthen the competitiveness of Costa Rican businesses on the global stage," said Basil Khalil, vice president of operations for FedEx Caribbean and Central America. "By investing in infrastructure and service enhancements, we're enabling faster, more flexible, and more efficient cross-border trade."

Services that rise to the challenge

In the second quarter of 2025, air transportation in Costa Rica moved over $2.9 billion worth of goods, representing 45% of total exports, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC)[1] and the Costa Rican Foreign Trade Promotion Agency. (PROCOMER)[2].

This share has grown steadily in recent years. In 2020, air transport accounted for just 31% of exports[3]. The increase of more than 13 percent over five years reflects the growing importance of this mode of transport for sectors such as healthcare and electronics.

Over the past 25 years, medical device exports have grown more than 33 times, becoming Costa Rica's leading export product. In the last five years alone, products classified as medicines have been exported to more than 50 destination markets, according to data from PROCOMER2. Additionally, air transport is the most widely used method for customs operations by companies operating under the Free Trade Zone regime, which is home to the majority of the 90 medical technology (MedTech) multinational companies established in Costa Rica, according to the Costa Rican Investment Promotion Agency (CINDE)[4].

The export of sensitive shipments, like pharma products, medical devices and electronic components, require reliable logistics services. FedEx meets the needs of these sectors through 22 ground routes in Costa Rica and a daily international flight, Monday to Friday with a direct connection to the FedEx Hub in Memphis, Tennessee, operated by a Boeing 767 aircraft.
