Kansas City Is Taking Action to Fight the Blight

Kansas City is helping property owners take an active role in strengthening neighborhoods through Fight the Blight, an initiative that pairs vacant property registration with clear guidance on property maintenance.

The City's updated vacant property registration ordinance expands registration requirements for qualifying vacant properties. Property owners must register with the City, maintain current contact information, and provide information about their plans for the property. Registration helps the City communicate with owners, share available resources, and address concerns before conditions worsen.

"Neglected vacant properties aren't just eyesores. They attract dumping, invite crime, and drag down the value of the homes around them," said Mayor Quinton Lucas. "The families who have kept up their homes and stayed invested in their neighborhoods shouldn't carry the cost of someone else's neglect. Fight the Blight is about restoring that fairness and bringing these properties back to productive use."

Maintenance and registration play an important role. Regular upkeep, including securing buildings, addressing needed repairs, and keeping grounds clear of trash and overgrowth, helps prevent small problems from becoming costly hazards. It also protects neighboring properties and preserves opportunities for future use.

Through education, outreach, and coordination with property owners, Fight the Blight aims to protect neighborhood pride and help vacant properties become assets for the community.
