Tāmaki Makaurau fares well amidst heavy rain and strong winds

Along with our neighbours, Auckland has had a couple of days of steady rain and strong winds. North east Auckland (Albany north) received the highest rainfall with 173mm.

All watches and warnings were lifted this morning, and fortunately, we did not experience any major flooding or evacuations. Adam Maggs, Auckland Emergency Management (AEM) General Manager says that despite the heavy rain, our river systems and stormwater network coped well.

"Overall, we've fared well, and I want to thank all Aucklanders for following our advice to stay safe. Our thoughts are with our neighbours in Northland who have been particularly impacted, and with other parts of New Zealand yet to experience the weather impacts. We will continue to support other regions as needed," says Adam. "While the sun is out today, there is still some surface flooding on roads. Take care and avoid driving, walking or playing in floodwater. Due to the amount of rain the region has experienced, the soil is saturated and Aucklanders need to be mindful of potential slip risks, even when the rain has stopped."

Remember, landslides can happen without warning. If you feel an immediate threat to your life or property - call 111.

Look out for the warning signs like rock fall at the bottom of slopes, doors or windows jamming, or cracks or slumps appearing in footpaths or driveways.

Weather impacts

Our teams have been on the ground and monitoring the weather from AEM's Emergency Coordination Centre since late afternoon on Wednesday. Some of the impacts we've seen from Wednesday afternoon through to Friday morning include:

Rainfall and wind speed

Multiple sites across the region recorded more than 100mm rain over 24 hours with total rainfall exceeding 100mm at 64 of 80 sites, and greater than 150mm at 12 sites. Warkworth, Albany, North Shore and the eastern side of the Waitākere Ranges had the highest rainfall amounts.

Wind gusts reached 70-100km/h, with exposed areas up to 115km/h.

Trees

Council arborists have responded to around 98 callouts relating to fallen trees, broken branches and clearing blocked roads.

This included a large pine tree down on Eastern Beach, a branch causing a local power outage in Onehunga and a large kānuka tree down in Titirangi.

Our crews responded quickly to these, and there are currently no major power outages impacting the region. If you see any damaged or fallen trees on public land, please report via Report a Problem.

Request for Services

The council's call centre received 105 stormwater callouts, 145 maintenance calls related to weather events, 242 calls related to roading, 55 civil defence / emergency services calls.

Our Healthy Waters team received 94 requests for service (RFS), with no habitable floor flooding requests:

  • Central: 45
  • North: 29
  • South: 20

Road closures

AT advises Tāmaki Drive road users to consider delaying their journeys or consider taking a different route this evening and tomorrow morning with the road reduced to one lane until rain eases and further assessments can be made.

To keep road users safe, one traffic lane near the embankment will remain closed until the weather improves and the damaged fence is repaired, or a temporary barrier is installed.

Falls Road, Warkworth remains closed this evening as there is still water crossing the ford. The road will remain closed until it subsides further. AT expects to re-open the road by tomorrow morning.

Mostly clear weekend ahead

MetService has advised that following the recent weather event, conditions across Auckland have now eased, with minimal risk of severe weather through today and into the weekend.

A front is expected to move across the upper North Island late Sunday into early Monday. This could bring some rain and potentially brief downpours and strong wind. If it does, it will be short and localised and MetService expects minimal impacts.
