WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) - chairman of the Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs - this week led a committee hearing with testimony from Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Secretary Doug Collins and Assistant Secretary for Management and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Richard Topping to review VA's FY2027 budget request and FY2028 advanced appropriations request.

"This committee, and Congress as a whole, has repeatedly demonstrated its strong bipartisan support for providing VA with all the resources it needs to deliver on its mission to care for those who have borne the battle," said Sen. Moran. "We have also demonstrated strong, bipartisan support for oversight of the department, its programs and its budget. VA must continue working in partnership with this committee towards our shared goals and make certain we both continue supporting veterans to achieve success after their military service."

In his opening statement, Sen. Moran spoke about the importance of VA's FY2027 budget request reflecting changes in VA's workforce and how VA will support its employees as it reorganizes the Veterans Health Administration to streamline care to veterans and their families.

"VA's success relies on an empowered and motivated workforce," continued Sen. Moran. "I know that VA employees are some of the brightest and most dedicated public servants, and I hope to hear today how VA's budget request will bolster the workforce and overcome some of the hiring challenges that many sectors in our country are facing."

VA's FY2027 budget request is $488.2 billion, a $34.9 billion increase from its FY2026 budget request. This funding will support care for more than 9.4 million veterans enrolled in the VA healthcare system, help provide nearly 170 million outpatient visits for veterans and their families and deliver disability benefits to more than 7.4 million veterans, in addition to millions of survivors and other beneficiaries.
