'The latest UN figures on food security and hunger in Sudan show that the situation remains extremely grave. It is difficult to comprehend that more than 19 million people are facing acute food insecurity, and that millions remain at emergency or catastrophic levels of hunger. More than 800,000 children are at risk of severe acute malnutrition, meaning they will die if they do not receive assistance. Although the figures indicate a slight improvement compared with last year, the situation remains dire. A new famine has so far been averted, underscoring the critical importance of sustained humanitarian efforts in Sudan', said Minister of International Development Åsmund Aukrust.
'The widespread food insecurity and hunger currently affecting the Sudanese population are the result of the brutal war that has been ongoing for more than three years. Norway urgently calls on all parties to lay down their arms and return to the negotiating table. There is no military solution to this conflict. In the meantime, all parties must facilitate unhindered humanitarian access to the millions of people enduring unimaginable suffering', said Aukrust
