Wayne State sees increase in new international student enrollment

Wayne State University is seeing encouraging momentum in international enrollment as the 2026-2027 academic year gets underway, with census numbers showing growth among our new international student population.

The increase reflects strong interest from students seeking an education in the heart of Detroit, as we proudly welcome new undergraduate students from more than 15 countries who are joining a diverse student body that already represents more than 70 countries.

Particularly, we are proud to share that Canadian undergraduate enrollment has grown by 10% this fall, including both new and continuing students, further strengthening Wayne State's longstanding relations with our neighbors to the north.

This growth speaks to the appeal of Wayne State's academic programs, urban location and unique opportunities for students to learn and create genuine connections within one of the nation's most dynamic metropolitan areas known for its vibrant culture and spirit of innovation.

During the 2025-2026 recruitment cycle, the Office of International Programs (OIP) strategically expanded its outreach across Canadian high schools, tallying more than 30 visits across 21 different schools to deepen our personal connection with students and counselors across the border.

These efforts build on more than a decade of annual open houses hosted by OIP in Ontario in collaboration with dozens of Wayne State departments and programs to showcase the breadth of opportunities available at our institution.

Beyond Canada, Wayne State's international presence spans the globe, bringing new perspectives and experiences to campus from countries near and far.

"Students around the world continue to recognize the opportunities that a Wayne State education provides," said Fareed Y. Shalhout, executive director of strategic global engagement. "We are proud to build meaningful relationships with students, families, and schools as we help prospective students see themselves as part of our Wayne State community."

That global perspective is reflected in the diversity of Wayne State's body of international students and the relationships they build across campus and within the broader Detroit community. As OIP expands its reach and reinforces connections, these students bring fresh perspectives and experiences for meaningful cross-cultural exchange.

"International students are an important part of what makes Wayne State a truly global university," said Dr. Christine Jackson, vice provost for partnerships and workforce. "The perspectives and experiences they bring enrich our campus and strengthen Wayne State's connections around the world. In a global city like Detroit, that exchange helps prepare all of our students to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world."

The Office of International Programs worked alongside the Office of Undergraduate Admissions to support a successful fall enrollment.

"It's genuinely exciting to welcome such an outstanding group of learners to Wayne State this fall," said Dr. Charles Cotton, vice provost of enrollment management. "Every conversation, every classroom, every corner of campus is richer for the range of experiences represented here."

OIP will build on this momentum through continued international recruitment, partnership-building, and engagement with prospective students around the world.
