(Washington, DC) - The DC Department of Public Works (DPW) is putting fun into winter preparations with the launch of its "Name That Plow" contest, inviting District residents to put their creativity to the test and help name eight of the city's snowplows-one representing each ward.
Whether it's a clever pun, a nod to DC history, a neighborhood inside joke, or a name that captures the unique spirit of the nation's capital, DPW wants residents to let their imaginations run wild.
"We know DC residents have a great sense of humor and plenty of hometown pride, so we're expecting some great submissions" said DPW Interim Director Chris Rodriguez. "DPW's Snow Team members work tirelessly to keep DC safe during winter weather. Whether it's a play on words or a shout-out to a favorite neighborhood, giving memorable names to plows throughout all eight wards adds a bit of community spirit to their important work."
The contest follows the District Snow Team's successful completion of Snow Mobilization Week, an annual exercise led by DPW to ensure personnel, equipment and technology are ready to respond to winter weather. With more than 1,000 employees and over 200 heavy and light plows supporting snow operations, the District Snow Team is preparing to keep roads safe and passable throughout the winter season.
How to Enter
Residents can submit their most creative snowplow names by visiting tinyurl.com/DPW-Name-That-Plow by Tuesday, November 10.
DPW encourages residents to think outside the snowbank and submit names that are:
"Snow removal is serious business, but that doesn't mean we can't have a little fun along the way," Rodriguez added. "And who knows? The next time a snowplow rolls down your street, it might be sporting a name you came up with!"
Plow names will be selected by DPW Director Chris Rodriguez and announced on December 15.
The contest is part of DPW's efforts to engage residents in the essential services that keep the District clean, safe and moving throughout the year. For more information about DPW's winter weather operations and snow preparedness, visit snow.dc.gov .
