FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 30, 2026 House Bill 9 and it's amendment is championed by Democrats, and it will hurt New Mexico Santa Fe, NM - The already controversial House Bill 9 and its latest amendment continue to prove just how extreme and out of touch Democrats have become in the New Mexico state legislature. Rather than come together and implement well-reasoned public policy to help their constituents, this bill brought forth by Democrats is nothing more than political grandstanding. However, it is grandstanding that could have profound effects on everyday life in our great state. "The only thing this bill does is make it infinitely more difficult for law enforcement to capture violent criminals who are in the country illegally," said Otero County District 3 Commissioner, Vickie Marquardt. "Democrat legislators who are pushing this are really failing to put politics aside and protect law-abiding New Mexicans, who will ultimately suffer from this disastrous bill. Protecting citizens from dangerous criminals should be the top priority for every elected official, and sadly, that's not the case with New Mexico Democrats. Not to mention the negative impacts this has with lost revenue and tax burdens this puts on our local economy." A refusal to cooperate with federal immigration officials and a proposal to ban detention facilities in New Mexico protect violent criminals, not victims. What's worse is that these aren't just ordinary criminals who benefit from this harmful bill. Among those detained in New Mexico are criminals convicted of smuggling deadly narcotics, sexual exploitation of children, assaults on police officers, sexual violence, and even homicide. Let's not forget that New Mexico also has massive problems with crime and has had those problems under Democrat leadership for many years. New Mexicans no longer feel safe in their communities, and radical left policies championed by Democrats are the sole cause of this. Furthermore, the recent amendment made to HB 9 places even further restrictions on efforts to crack down on illegal immigration by banning cooperation with federal law enforcement entirely. None of this addresses how HB 9 would negatively affect local economies in New Mexico by taking away jobs from hardworking families. As our state continues to suffer and New Mexicans look to elected leaders for help, this bill helps no one, and if passed, would make our state even more dangerous overnight. ### |
