Women's Equality Month and Women's Equality Day

By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:

Women's Equality Month and Women's Equality Day

WHEREAS, the month of August is recognized as Women's Equality Month in honor of the generations of women whose courage, determination, and leadership have strengthened our communities, advanced our nation, and expanded opportunities for future generations; and

WHEREAS, in 1971 the United States Congress designated August 26 as Women's Equality Day to commemorate the anniversary of the certification of the 19th Amendment that granted many women the right to vote; and

WHEREAS, we recognize that the ratification of the 19th Amendment did not secure voting rights for all women, as many women from marginalized communities continued to face barriers to the ballot for decades thereafter, and we honor the courage and resilience of those who fought tirelessly to advance women's rights, expand access, and break down barriers to equality; and

WHEREAS, women throughout the history of Virginia have made extraordinary contributions to public service, education, business, healthcare, science, agriculture, the arts, military service, and countless other fields, helping create a stronger, more vibrant, and more inclusive Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, women continue to serve as innovators, entrepreneurs, caregivers, educators, advocates, first responders, elected officials, and community leaders whose efforts benefit every corner of our Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, Women's Equality Month provides an opportunity to celebrate the achievements and contributions of women while recognizing the continued pursuit of equality and reaffirming the Commonwealth of Virginia's commitment to fostering a future in which every woman and girl has the opportunity to thrive free from barriers to success;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Abigail D. Spanberger, Governor, do hereby recognize August 2026 as WOMEN'S EQUALITY MONTH and August 26, 2026, as WOMEN'S EQUALITY DAY in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call these observances to the attention of all our citizens.
